The Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) serves as the administrative heart of a state government, coordinating policies, advising the governor, and overseeing the implementation of government programs. The SSG acts as a central hub for policy formulation, harmonisation, and execution, ensuring the smooth functioning of various government ministries, agencies, and parastatals

Key Functions and Responsibilities

  • Policy Coordination and Implementation:

The SSG monitors and coordinates the implementation of general government policies and programs. 

  • Advisory Role:

It serves as a key advisory organ to the governor, providing guidance and support on policy matters. 

  • Policy Formulation:

The SSG drives the formulation, harmonisation, and implementation of state policies. 

  • Oversight of Government Operations:

It oversees the operations of various government ministries, agencies, and parastatals. 

  • Executive Council Secretariat:

In some states, the SSG also oversees the State Executive Council Secretariat, which manages the day-to-day affairs of the council. 

  • General Administration:

The SSG may also be responsible for general administration within the state government. 

  • Other Units:

Depending on the state, the SSG may also oversee specific units like the State Directorate of Volunteer Services, speech writing units, or state offices of NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa’s Development). 

In essence, the SSG is crucial for ensuring the efficient and effective administration of the state government.
